What is that thing in sharpies, nail polish remover, nail polish, expo pens, etc. that are bad to smell?

The sweet smelling substance that is used in most markers and some adhesives as solvents is called ';toluene';. Toluene is also known as methylbenzene or phenylmethane, it is the benzene ring in its structure which gives it the familiar sweet smell.

Toluene is known to be a mild halucinogen and is banned in a number of south east asian countries due to its popularity among ';street urchins';. There are also studies which indicate that chronic exposure to toluene results in a decline of color perception. What is that thing in sharpies, nail polish remover, nail polish, expo pens, etc. that are bad to smell?
I read that acetone is in nail polish, so it's that or alcohol but it makes you high... DO NOT SMELL!What is that thing in sharpies, nail polish remover, nail polish, expo pens, etc. that are bad to smell?
In nail polish remover the main ingredient is acetone, very nasty stuff in general. I assume that the component of the other items you listed that gives that smell is either acetone also or some chemical in the same vein. The others may also use some form of alcohol instead.
